Although Yeats was born in Dublin and died in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, he spent much of his childhood in County Sligo, an area which inspired much of his poetry. He asked to be buried in the county, and his grave is in the grounds of Drumcliffe Church. His remains were interred here in 1948. Now, one of the County most famous landmarks, the grave bears the enigmatic inscription "Cast a cold eye on Life, on Death, horsemen pass by!" at Yeats’ request.
