Controversial when it was unveiled in 2002, The Spire is already one of Dublin’s best-known landmarks and by far the tallest. The stainless steel sculpture pierces the sky at 120 metres where its tip flexes in the wind. By day it reflects the street and by night the illuminated tip casts a soft light above it. The Spire was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects, who won a competition set to replace Nelson’s Pillar, which was blown up in 1966.
