One of the most famous memorial gardens in Europe, Dublin’s War Memorial Gardens slope picturesquely down to the River Liffey. They were designed by the architect Edwin Lutyens with his usual simplicity, which is appropriate for gardens commemorating some 49,000 Irish soldiers lost in World War I. Their eight hectares comprise a sunken rose garden, herbaceous borders, lawns, and at their centre, a War Stone enclosed by circular fountains. Granite bookrooms here once held books listing the names of those who died.
