Tintern Abbey is an atmospheric ruin set in open countryside. A chancel, tower, cloister and chapel remain of the Cistercian Abbey founded 1200 and lived in until as recently as the 1960s. The Abbey was bequeathed by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, in gratitude for being rescued from certain shipwreck in Bannow Bay. Note the red-coloured carvings, made from local Old Red Sandstone containing pieces of quartz. The Abbey is named after Tintern in Wales.
