Thurles has a very unusual mock Romanesque Cathedral. Completed in 1879, it was probably built in this style to emphasis continuity with the past. Another nod to the history of ecclesiastical architecture includes a Byzantine-style baptistery, inspired by the one at Pisa. An outstanding Rose Window, designed by Mayer & Company, a tall square tower standing 120 feet high, and a magnificent tabernacle, designed by Giacomo Della Porta, a pupil of Michelangelo are among its other attractions. The rest of the cathedral is made from only the best materials, including local limestone, Galway marble, Aberdeen granite and Portland stone.
