A walker’s and birdwatcher’s paradise, The Gearach is Western Europe’s only post-glacial alluvial forest. It takes its name from “An Gaoire”, meaning the wooden river, and this flooded forest supports a wealth of plant and animal life. Herons, frogs, smooth newts and the extremely rare mud worth are among them. The area’s biodiversity has been recognized and it was created a national nature reserve in 1987. Birdwatchers flock here in October to see migrating birds doing the same.
