This pleasure house is one of the most important 18th-century neo-classical buildings in Europe and the finest in Ireland. Designed by Sir William Chambers for James Caulfield, First Earl of Charlemont, it has 16 rooms on three floors. Many have patterned marquetry floors, ornate plasterwork and other architectural delights. The Casino was built between 1755 and the 1770s, but by 1930 it was falling down. It took an Act of Parliament to save it, and it was then restored. Today, access to the Casino is by guided tour only.
