Sligo Abbey has survived from medieval Sligo. Maurice Fitzgerald built the Abbey in 1252 for the Dominican Friars. Unfortunately, they accidently set it on fire in 1414. Then, Sir Frederick Hamilton did the same in 1641, but this time on purpose. Surprisingly, much of interest remains, including Gothic and Renaissance tombs, a 13th-century cloister and the only surviving 15th-century monastic altar in Ireland. Legend says that the silver Abbey bell is at the bottom of Lough Gill and only those free from sin can hear it ring.
