The Skibbereen Heritage Centre houses two exhibitions about the area. Ireland’s Great Famine hit Skibbereen especially hard, killing more than 10,000 residents. The Great Famine Exhibition commemorates that time. The Lough Hyne Interpretive Centre reveals the history, geology and folklore of Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve through an audio-visual display. Other collections cover the wildlife of the Ilen and local archeology and archeology. The Centre also has a gift shop and a reference library.
