The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded in Thurles in 1884, and the town’s Semple Stadium is regarded as Ireland’s premier hurling venue. It’s certainly a good place to see this ancient sport. Covering 11 acres and having a capacity of 53,000, only Croke Park in Dublin is bigger. The Stadium is named in memory of Tom Semple, Tipperary All-Ireland Hurling Captain and GAA administrator. The grounds used to be Thurles Showground. They were bought by the GAA in 1910 for 900 Irish pounds.
