Pilgrims began arriving at Scattery Island in the sixth century, and some of the island’s ruins date from that time. Others were built later, with the latest of all dating from the 15th century. Among them, a cathedral, churches, a monastery, a holy well and a perfectly formed 120-metre-tall round tower from the 10th century. Visitors can explore these monuments and the island’s rich wildlife. Scattery Island is uninhabited, but regular boat trips visit it from Kilrush Marina.
