St Peter’s is regarded as one of the finest Gothic Revival churches in Ireland, its limestone façade a striking feature of the town. However, the church is probably more famous as the home of the National Shrine to St Oliver Plunkett, who was martyred in 1691 at Tyburn. His was canonized in 1975. The elaborate Shrine contains his preserved head as well as the door of the cell where he was imprisoned at Newgate.
