Saint John’s Cathedral has Ireland’s tallest spire. At 94 metres, it looms over Limerick, the city’s tallest structure. Designed by the English architect, Thomas Hardwick in 1856, the Victorian Gothic Cathedral is made from Limerick limestone and it’s thought the design is influenced by Salisbury Cathedral. Other features include a 1.5 ton bell, an altar of Limerick marble and alabaster, and a stirring rood screen suspended from an arch high above the altar. Saint John’s is a Catholic cathedral.
