Where the Ballysadare River meets the sea there stands what looks like a giant piece of topiary. In fact, it’s the ivy-covered ruins of an ancient church, dating from the seventh century. Under the ivy, there’s a fine Romansque doorway, which was inserted into the south wall, a Romanesque font and a medieval gravestone. Fragments from Saint Fechin’s can be seen in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. The church is on the site of a monastery founded by St Fechin.
