Roscrea’s marooned Round Tower is all that’s left of the town’s Augustinian priory. The 60-foot-tall stone tower was once even taller, but the British demolished the top 20 feet in 1798 after a sniper climbed to the top and fired at sentries in the nearby barracks. Nearly opposite is the remains of St Cronan’s Church. It was built in the 12th century and demolished in 1812 - except for the beautiful Romanesque west gable, which thankfully was allowed to stand.
