From a distance, an odd bump is visible on the long flat top of Knocknarea Mountain. Closer inspection reveals it to be the massive Queen Maeve’s Cairn. Measuring 10m high and 55m across, the mound of stones is thought to be over 3000 years old. Legend says that it was built for Queen Maeve, the first-century ruler of Ireland, although it’s likely she is buried elsewhere, where she died. Climbing to the Cairn takes about 45 minutes.
