Phoenix Park is the largest city park in Europe, and at 1752 acres it’s more than double the size of Central Park. Fields, forests, flowerbeds and a fresh-water stream unite to make Dublin’s hectic streets, although nearby, a distance memory. The park is also home to Ashdown, Castle, a 17th-century tower house discovered in 1978 when the papal nuncio’s residence built round it was demolished, and Áras an Uachtaráin, the President’s residence. The park’s name is a corruption of fionn uisce, which means clear water.
