Ormonde Castle is a rare example of an Irish Elizabethan Manor, and it’s regarded as the finest one in the country. Built by the Earl of Ormond in the 1560s, it’s full of history. Among the highlights, a beautiful symmetrical Elizabethan façade with neat rows of mullioned windows, Ireland’s finest decorative plasterwork in the former state rooms, and a remarkable collection of royal charters, the oldest from 1661. The champion cyclist Sean Kelly was born here, and some historians claim that Anne Boleyn was too – her father was James, third Earl of Ormond.
