The city of Waterford is over 1000 years old, and its surviving medieval walls are the most complete in Ireland. The Vikings first fortified the town, but their defences were breached in 1170 by the Anglo-Normans, who soon began their own wall-building programme. By the end of the medieval period, the city was ringed with walls and towers. Long stretches of wall and six towers survive, the best at Castle Street, Railway Square and Stephen Street. Walking tours usually leave the Granville Hotel at 2pm daily.
