Ireland’s National Gallery houses 2,500 paintings and some 10,000 other works. All the major European Schools are represented. Highlights include Caravaggio’s The Taking of Christ (1602), Fra Angelico’s alterpieces, Thomas Gainsborough’s The Cottage Girl, Johannes Vermeer’s Woman writing a Letter, with her Maid, and Francisco de Goya’s Doña Antonia Zárate. The gallery also has an outstanding collection of Irish Painting, with works from the last 400 years, including paintings by Jack B Yeats, Ireland’s most important 20th-century artist. Admission to the permanent collection is free.
