This historic tower stands on Drogheda’s highest ground and it can be seen for miles around. It’s all that’s left of an important Dominican Friary, founded by the Archbishop of Armagh in 1224. It was here that the Chiefs of Ulster and Leinster expressed submission to Richard II in the 14th century. The tower seen today was the Belfry tower of the Friary. Some 14th-century floor tiles excavated here can be seen in Drogheda’s excellent Millmount Museum.
