Lismore Castle is perhaps Ireland’s most magnificent castle. Rising from forests high above the River Blackwater, it offers spectacular views over the river valley all the way to the Knockmealdown Mountains. Prince John first built a castle here in 1185, and other owners and visitors have included Sir Walter Raleigh and Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork. Castle highlights include some of the best gardens in Northern Europe, with sculptures by renowned sculptors such as Antony Gormley and Eilís O’Connell, and a contemporary art gallery showing work by some of the world’s most original artists.
