Carlow’s famous landmark, the Liberty Tree, commemorates the 1798 Rising of the United Irishmen. At that time 640 rebels were killed in Carlow Town and their remains are buried in the Croppies Grave in Graiguecullen. The sculptured fountain by the world-renowned sculptor, John Behan, was constructed at the end of the 1990s in time for the 200th anniversary of the Rising. Today, the Liberty Tree is at the centre of a popular area for meeting, gathering and relaxing.
