Lackeen Castle

One of the oldest Mass Books in Europe was found here. The ninth-century Lorrha Missal, also called the Stowe Missal, is now kept in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. The Castle itself was built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 16th century, when the Missal was discovered encased in a bronze and silver shrine hidden in the Castle Walls. The shrine is in the National Museum in Dublin. The castle is in a good state of preservation and open to visitors.
