Kilmainham Gaol is the largest disused gaol in Ireland and Britain. Its massive vaulted interior has an airy feel, but its purpose was far more oppressive, enabling guards to see into all the cells at once. To find out what that felt like, ask to be locked in. Further insights are on offer in the Museum, which tells the story of Ireland’s struggle for Independence. Access to the gaol is by guided tour. Kilmainham Gaol appeared in the films The Italian Job, In the Name of the Father and Michael Collins.
