Killoloe cathedral stands at the southern end of Lough Derg. Sturdily built in the 13th century, it is shaped like a cross, with a low tower. Inside, the famous Thorgrim Stone stands near the door. Unusually, it has Runic and Ogtham inscriptions - Runic is the language of the Vikings and Scandinavian in origin, and Ogham is the Latin-based language of early Christianity. Head outside to see St Flannan’s Oratory, a fine 12th-century barrel-vaulted church.
