Dating all the way back to 1601, Kanturk castle is one of County Cork’s earliest Renaissance building. Notable features include an excellent Renaissance door, mullioned windows and massive square corner towers and some fine fireplaces. The castle was started by Dermot MacQwen in 1601, but deemed too threatening by the Privy Council who sent troops to stop it being built and it was never completed. It is open to the public and admission is free.
