A magical place, Inishmurray is a deserted island 5km of the coast of Sligo. The last islanders left in the 1950s and today only birds and rabbits live among the mysterious ruins they left behind. So many birds in fact, that the island is a bird sanctuary nationally important for the number that winter and breed here. Human visitors tend to arrive in summer by boat from Mullaghmore. One of the first to do so was probably St Molaise who founded a monastic settlement here in the sixth century. Altars, beehive cells and roofless walls now add atmosphere to an already evocative place.
