Hook House Lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in northern Europe and possibly in the world. Dating from the 13th century, it was built by William Marshal, Earl of Pembrokeshire, to guide ships past Waterford’s treacherous coastline into the Harbour. Legend says that Dubhán, a Welsh monk, first placed a light here in the sixth century after finding the bodies of sailors washed up on the rocks. Visitors can climb the 115 steps to the top of the lighthouse, explore the visitor centre, dine in the Lighthouse café, and browse in the craft shop.
