Holy Cross Abbey is so called because it has a piece of the Holy Rood or true cross. The sacred relic was given to the Abbey by Queen Isabella in the early 1200s. It has drawn pilgrims from around the world since then. Founded in 1180 by Kin Donal Mor O’Brien, the Abbey was extended in the 15th century and restored in the 1990s. Now a fully functioning church, it is also open to visitors and guided tours are available. There’s also a small shop.
