The square Gothic tower of this ruined Franciscan Friary dwarfs the small village of Timoleague. The Friary was probably founded in 1240 by McCarthy Riabach, Lord of Carbery, but Edmond de Courcey, Bishop of Ross added the tower in 1500. The Friary was sacked in 1649, leaving behind a picturesque waterside ruin. Surviving features include a large church, a library, an infirmary and a dormitory. The Friary is open to visitors and guided tours are available. It has national monument status.
