Fota Arboretum and Gardens
Carrigtwohill, County Cork - Ireland

Map
Fota comes from the Gaelic words, Fód te, meaning warm soil, and it is from this that one of the best outdoor collections of tender trees and shrubs in Britain and Ireland has grown. Inspired planting has played a part too, with the first exotic species introduced by John Smith-Barry in the mid 19th century. Today the Arboretum is of international importance. Highlights include Tasmanian Tree Ferns planted in the Victorian Fernery, an excellent rose collection in the walled garden and an impressive Canary Island Date Palm in the restored Orangerie.
