In the 13th century, Ennis Friary was considered the best place in Ireland to get an education. Evidence of its wealth includes the magnificent East Window, a richly ornamented rood screen and many fine sculptures carved from local limestone, including St Francis displaying the stigmata. The highlight is probably the 15th-century McMahon’s Tomb, which is decorated with carved alabaster. The O’Briens founded the Friary in the 13th century. Today, it’s managed by the state Ireland and guided tours are available on request.
