Dungarvan Castle is an Anglo-Norman fortification of 1185. Also known as King John’s castle, it was built by the King on a strategic site at the mouth of the River Colligan. The ruins include a keep, a curtain wall, a corner tower and a gate tower. A visitor centre in the unusual polygonal keep hosts exhibitions detailing the castle’s history and archeology. The castle is open to the public during the summer, but access to it is by guided tour only.
