Dublin Castle stands in the centre of the city on strategic high ground, which has been fortified for a least a millennium. The present building is largely Georgian though, dating from the time when the Castle was the seat of English Government in Ireland. Reminders of earlier residents remain: from the original Viking defense bank still visible in the Undercroft to the 13th-century Norman Tower, now home to the Garda Police Museum. Other attractions include The State Rooms, The Chapel Royal, the Chester Beatty Library, the Vaults Restaurant, the Silk Road Café and a gift shop.
