Mullioned, gabled and turreted, Donegal Castle is a good example of Jacobean architecture. It also has 14 fireplaces. Sir Basil Brooke rebuilt the Castle in 1607 after Hugh O’Donnel – Red Hugh – burnt it down to prevent the English getting it. These events and others are chronicled in panels inside the church. Donegal Castle belongs to the state, and guided tours are available. The castle is open from March to October.
