The Donagh High Cross is one of the finest early Christian relics in Britain and Ireland. It probably dates from the seventh century, although some historians have suggested that it’s even older. Intricately carved with interlacing patterns and figures, it is a curious mix of Celtic and Christian motifs and symbols. There is a representation of the Virgin Mary, but also the Celtic Wheel of Life. It stands 3.5m high on the site of a monastery founded by St Patrick for Bishop MacCairthen.
