Desmond Castle is a 15th-century urban tower house with a museum inside. The international Museum of Wine traces the fascinating history of wine in Ireland, from smuggling to international trade. It focuses on the famous Irish émigré wine traders, or “winegeese”, who imported the first wines to the country from around the world. Exhibits include antique bottles, French wine jugs and early Irish decanters. The castle too has had an eventful past, having been a custom house, a prison, a workhouse, a cowshed and a stable. It was declared a national monument in 1997.
