Croppies Grave is the last resting place of the 640 United Irishmen killed during the 1798 Rising. They were hastily buried here in quicklime after the rebellion on May 25. Today, a monument over the mass grave commemorates their deaths. It’s bordered by railings and an ornate wrought iron gateway. The "Croppies" were so called because their hair was cropped short as a mark of allegiance. Another mass Croppies Grave is in front of the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Dublin.
