St John’s Cathedral in Sligo is an impressive building dating from 1730. It was designed by the German architect, Richard Cassells, and it’s well known for its commemorative plaques, the most famous of which is the brass tablet in memory of Yeats’ parents, Susan and Mary. They were married in the Cathedral in 1863. More evidence of Yeats’ Sligo roots can be seen outside in the churchyard, where his grandparents, the Pollexfens, are buried. Good acoustics makes the cathedral an excellent concert venue.
