Cavan’s 20th-century Cathedral was one of the last grand Roman Catholic cathedrals to be built in Ireland. Completed in 1942, it has a basilica-like interior with contrasting coloured marble. Other highlights of this neo-classical cathedral include a spire of 230 feet, stained glass windows by Harry Clarke, one of Ireland’s leading artists, Pavinazetto marble statues, and sculptures by Dublin sculptor Edward Smith. The architect was W H Byrne.
