Carlow Courthouse is regarded as one of the finest courthouse buildings in Ireland. Based on the Temple of Llissus in Athens and made of Carlow granite, it was designed by William Vitruvius Morrison in 1830. Beneath the large temple-like structure, a labyrinth of cells and dungeons are hidden. Rumour has it that this very grand building was intended for the much larger town of Cork, but the plans got mixed up. The cannon on the front steps is from the Crimean War.
