Carey’s Castle is a picturesque ruin set in woodland beside the Glenary River. The surrounding trees are slowly overwhelming it and a stand of Japanese larch and old Scots pine can already be seen growing in the old walled garden. The ruin can be reached via footpaths through forests of birth, oak and beech while a second path follows the riverbank. Look out for fallow deer, foxes, rabbits, otters and sparrow hawks. Plant life includes woodrush, sorrel, ferns and sage.
