Cahir Castle is the best reason for visiting Cahir. It’s one of the biggest and best-preserved castles in Ireland, with an equally impressive location, rising as it does from a rocky islet in the River Suir. The Castle was first built in 1142 by Conor O’Brien, Prince of Thomond. Highlights include a remarkably intact 12th-century castle keep and tower and a visitor centre with an audio-visual show and exhibitions. The Castle is owned and managed by the state and the guided tours are fascinating.
