Brian Ború was the last high King of Ireland, and according to folklore he was either born or raised at this romantic spot. Overlooking Lough Derg, the remains of an 11th-century ring fort are hidden in a small woodland of native Irish trees. Over 800 stone artefacts have been found here. They include stone axes, hammer stones and fishing nets and tools. Brian Ború lived from 941 until 1014, when he was killed in the Battle of Clontarf. He is buried in the grounds of St Patrick’s Cathedral in the city of Armagh.
