The Book of Kells represents the artistic zenith of Celtic Christianity and it’s regarded as the finest illuminated manuscript in Europe. Probably produced on the monastic Island of Iona in the early 8th century, its 680 calfskin pages illuminate the Four Gospels so intricately that some details cannot be seen with the naked eye. The manuscript is on display in Trinity College Library, where the exhibition Turning Darkness into Light tells the story of this and other illuminated manuscripts, such as the astonishing Book of Durrow and the Book of Armagh.
