Ballyness Bay is large estuary in the shadow of Errigal and Muckish Mountains. Landlocked and shallow, it is connected to the Atlantic by only a narrow stream, which drains it at low tide revealing extensive sand flats. Ballyness Bay is an important waterfowl habitat. Species include Ringed Plovers, Brent Geese, Red-breasted merganser, Curlews, Lapwings and many more. Flora includes Common Cockle, Eelgrass, Common Dog-violet and Wild Pansies. Sailing, fishing and other water sports are popular here.
