Ballynahow Castle is a well preserved and beautifully formed round tower. Round towers are quite rare in Ireland and this is one of the finest. Built in the 16th century, it has five storeys, two internal vaults, a spiral staircase and narrow windows deeply set in very thick walls. Inside the atmosphere is as thick as the walls, with tiny rooms, nooks, crannies and secret murder holes waiting to be explored. The roof once had a conical timber roof.
