Ballyhack’s tall tower house looks down across the Waterford Estuary and Ballyhack village. It has been the focus of the village since around 1450, when it was built, probably by the Knights Hospitallers of St John. Its strategic position on the estuary would have given them vital control over river traffic. Look out for the splayed walls, designed for added strength and the secret room hidden in them. The Castle is managed by the state. Guided tours are available on request.
