For 600 years Ballindoon Abbey has stood above the clear blue waters of Lough Arrow. Built as a Dominican Friary in 1507 by Thomas O’Farrell, it’s now a fairly well preserved ruin consisting of a church with a nave, a tower, a chancel and a transept. There’s an interesting gravestone to Terence McDonagh, an important Catholic lawyer, in a ground-floor compartment and memorials going back as far as the 17th century elsewhere. The Abbey is also known as St Mary’s Priory.
